The regional network node RBNet (terrestrial optical fiber channels) that provided the Internet access for the university was founded under the auspices of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation in 1999. At present, an external channel with the carrying capacity of 512 Kbps is functioning. Two Internet computer labs have been opened to provide free access to the Internet for students, professors and post-graduates of the university. Over 3,000 users are registered at the university Internet-center. The modem pool has been created, permitting to hook the deans' offices, chairs and other departments to the Internet for the informational support of the education process.

Within the project of creating the Regional Information Network for education, science and culture of the Republic of Adygheya, the Ministry of Education and Science of Adygheya, the Education Committee of Maykop City Administration, and 24 secondary schools were hooked to the Internet.


The information service of the university, founded in 1999, includes:

  • Centre for Information and Teaching Technologies
  • Department of Information Technologies
  • Technical and Maintenance Department

One of the main trends of the university development is the use of modern information and communication technologies in the educational process, research and university management.

From 1996 to June 2001, the number of IBM-compatible computers increased from 15 to 379.

There are 19 modern network computer labs in the university, which are used in the educational process; many of them are united into larger local networks.

The Program of Informatization of Adyghe State University for 2001-2002 was approved by the University Academic Council on January 25, 2001. The project of the corporative computer network of the university that will include all the main departments of the university and will become the basic segment of the Regional network for education, science and culture of Adygheya, has been worked out. The university network will have the carrying capacity of 100/1000 Mbps. It will permit to use new information technologies (including multimedia technologies) widely and effectively in the education process and research.


Nowadays the issues of management improvement are the key ones in solving many university problems. The integrated automated information system (IAIS) is being developed, ordered by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. As the accomplice of the IAIS subsystems, the university received the SUN Fire 280 Server in 2001. The following subsystems were developed: "Personnel Department: Students", "Personnel Department: Employees", "Dean's Office", "Chair". At present, such IAIS subsystems as Applicant and Tuition Control function successfully.

An important goal of the university informatization is providing the quality of professional training and the effectiveness of the educational process on the basis of wide use of electronic educational technologies in the educational process.

At present, the standardized methods of developing assessment tests have been worked out for the university faculty. The universal system of automated testing has been developed. This program was successfully used by different departments during pass-or-fail exams of the spring semester in 2001. Thirteen testing programs and databases were bought. The institutional funds of testing and educational software were formed. Electronic educational and testing programs are effectively used at the Department of Foreign Languages and the Department of Nature Studies.

The system of distance education is being developed. The realization of this project will permit the creation of the Center for Distance Education.

Another important trend of the informatization process is the development of educational and research resources of the university. At present, the university official web-server and the information server on teaching methods are being widely used.

One of the main tasks is the modernization of the university library. At present, the work of converting the university library into a modern electronic library is being done. This will allow to considerably improve the library services. The automated information library system MARK-SQL has been bought. The library personnel have completed special courses. New library technologies, such as electronic catalogue search, ordering and receiving necessary document at your computer, and bar-coding, will be available by means of the Internet. It will be possible to get the necessary information not only from the university library, but from other libraries, too. The distance won't matter. It has been planned to post the electronic catalogue on the Internet this September.

The project of the electronic corporative library permitting to unite the resources of the university library and National Library of Adygheya has been worked out.
